How did I a) create this blue "M" on the current tab and b) how do I get rid of this?

Hey Matthew it looks like you converted this page to a Master Page. You can convert it back to a page by clicking on the arrow and selecting 'Convert to Page'. See below for a screenshot:
Please let me know if this doesn't do the trick!
