Set default fill color using conditional formatting based on shape type?

Network A

How can I set a default color for a shape based on its type? For example when I drag out a "Terminator" shape I'd like it to be red. When I drag out a "Process" shape I'd like it to be blue. I have played with "Conditional Formulas" but not seeing how to control color based on shape type.

Hey there thanks for continuing this thread! As you work the colors you use in your document (whether they are custom or one of Lucidchart's pre-set options) will appear at the top of the Color Fill menu.

This should help you to quickly identify the colors currently being used and choose one easily without having to use the dropper. Additionally if you find yourself frequently working with the same colors - for example your company's brand colors - I recommend creating a template from a document that has used these colors. That way they'll be available at the top of the menu every time you create a document based on that template. You can learn more about creating a template from a document in our Work with Templates article from our Help Center. Please let me know if you have any additional questions!

Hello

Thanks for posting in the community! There isn't a way to designate a different default color for each shape type however you could create a custom shape library and add each of shapes in the color that you would like it to be. Then whenever you used that shape from your new shape library it would automatically have the desired styling. Hope this helps!

A related question:

How do I add colors to the permanent color palette? I have been using the eyedropper which works but is a little slow. I'd like to have a custom color palette always available.

I thought I saw that earlier but it no longer seems to be the case for me. Here is what I see.The custom shape colors visible in the screencapture are not in the "Fill Color" palette (there are similar colors but not identical).

NOTE: This document originated as a Visio conversion if that has any bearing.

Thanks for getting back to me! The Fill Color menu can hold only 27 "in use" colors at the top of the menu. If a new one is added it will bump out the earliest (top left) color in the menu. I suspect that this is the case with the blue purple and pink shown in your screenshot. Can you try creating a new shape with one of those three colors using the eye dropper to see if it successfully adds the color to the bottom right of the "in use" palette?

I have tried your suggestion (that's what I'm doing constantly). Nothing gets added to the Fill Color menu.

If I start a new document the custom colors get added:

Is there any way to "purge" the Fill Color menu?

@network a Thanks for clarifying the behavior you're experiencing. I'm not able to reproduce this in any of my own documents - perhaps there is a connection to its Visio origin! I'd be glad to take a closer look at it if you provide the document URL to us here. Unfortunately it's not possible to purge the "in use" palette - if that ability would be useful for your day-to-day work in Lucidchart our development team is always interested in understanding this sort of use case and need and would love to hear more about it in our Product Feedback Space.
