This used to be an easy thing to do, but with the updated layout I cannot find it and all the help articles are outdated.
I just want to change the background color or fill of a shape. I don’t want to make a whole new style. Just change the color of the font and the border and the background. I can do some of these, but not all. Please help.

Hi @Captainmeow, thank you for posting in the community! You should be able to simply change the fill colour of a shape by following the steps below:
Select the shape you want to fill with color.
Click the Fill Color icon from the Formatting bar at the top of the workspace.
Select a color.
I’ve also attached a GIF demonstrating this:
If this is not what you are seeing, could you please share a screenshot or recording to help us take a closer look? Thank you!
Thank you for the reply. I don’t have the button you're showing, even when I click more. What am I doing wrong?
Thank you for sharing that screenshot @Captainmeow! Your UI is appearing different to my GIF because you are one of the users who are placed on the A/B test where we detach the formatting bar and only show it when its selected. The following post has more details about this:
Looking at your screenshot, it looks like you may be using the Text box shape in your diagram - is this correct? If so, it is expected that you cannot change the fill colour for this shape.
Instead, I would recommend using the text block shape as this will allow you to change the fill colour and also format the outline as needed.
l hope this helps! Please let me know if this is not working for you and I’d be happy to further assist :)
Hi Leianne,
Thank you for the explanation and the help. I thought I was able to use the text block as a block before and change the background. Did this change in the past few months?
If I use the block can I still write in it or do I need to make a shape, then add the text box on top, which means juggling two shapes per “block”.
Thank you again,
Amanda
Hi @Captainmeow, it is expected that the text shape doesn’t allow you to change the fill colour but it is possible using the ‘Block’ shape in my previous screenshot. You won’t need to group separate shapes to add text using the ‘block’ shape! :)
This is what the shape looks like on the canvas and similar to the text shape, you can double-click the text and change it to anything you’d like:
Feel free to let me know if you have any questions and I’d be happy to help. Cheers!
