Why can't I link an action to a Group of items

John M103

I'm trying to create a C4 diagramming flow.  To facilitate this I need to link actions to different objects on the page.   I also have objects grouped together to create a universal set of Diagramming objects for the end users.

At the moment I can't find a way to create an action link between a Group and another diagramming asset.   The only thing I can find is a hot spot but it changes the color of the display and if I make it invisible it can't be moved around with the group easily.

This lack of function is introducing friction into the process of encouraging our engineering teams to create diagrams for their work.

Is there a PRACTICAL way to make a group linkable?   Can we make this a feature if there isn't?

Thanks
Jocko

Hi Jocko

Thank you for taking the time to share your use case and functionality you'd like to see. I tested a few different options but was unable to uncover a workaround that would accomplish what you're needing to do. It is possible to add a hotspot to a group of items but as you called out this will change the color of the display.

Would you mind passing this feedback along to our Product Development team using this form? Ideas submitted there are reviewed by the team for their consideration and is how you can have the most impact on features and functionality that is prioritized for development.

I apologize for the inconvenience. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Hey all

Sorry to dig up a post that's a year and a half old. I just wanted to see if there was any traction on this? Ran into this same issue today myself.

Not sure if Lucid has a public-facing kanban/work-board but happy to submit another request or whatever is needed to add additional support for this!

Hi Christopher thanks for your post! Unfortunately this is still unsupported in Lucidchart. But you're in the right place to share your feedback! Thanks for taking the time to let us know this is important to you. If you're willing we'd love to learn more about your particular use case and what you'd like to see in this experience!

Hey Micah

Thanks for the prompt response.

Use case isn't anything particularly special/out-of-the-box. My team just creates a lot of architecture diagrams that tend to use grouped icons/text to represent objects.

As it is now grouped objects still need to individually have links assigned to them which usually requires "opening" the group and individually clicking on the objects in it and assigning them the same link.

While creating a hot spot is an option as John/Jocko mentioned in their original post it's not an ideal way to go about it either due to either having to leave the colored overlay or make it invisible but potentially deal with abandoning it.

Instead it seems like it would be great to make the entire group area clickable (unsure if it should be a toggle on/off type thing as there may be others that have need of "click-through" in the dead-zones of grouped objects) or otherwise have assignable actions/metadata.

Logically grouped objects seem to be treated as "one" object together so it seems odd to not be able to treat them as such with things like links etc.

For reference in the image I've attached I've individually added the link to each object in the group. As you can see they highlight when holding Cmd/Ctrl+Shift to make them clickable. However the group itself isn't clickable and results in a "T" shaped link where there's dead-space around the group making the object interactions feel inconsistent (especially since you have to hold the above key-chord to even see that something is clickable).

A passable work-around that I've found for the above and have been using up to now though is that you can make the title/text box fit the height/width of the object group and then format the text to position the way that you want it around the object.

Again as John/Jocko mentioned though this isn't a great way to sell your team on documenting things well.

The work-around I mentioned produces the below result:
