Is there a way to reduce the amount of space between nodes in a mindmap? The spacing is far too much making it difficult to see a lot without scrolling or zooming out to the point where it becomes difficult to read.

Unfortunately, custom spacing with the default mind map template is not currently supported in Lucid. However, you can use any of these templates (Simple mind map, Sticky note mind map, Concept map template) which all allow for customized spacing between ideas.
