Hi all...i am very, very new to Lucid & was hoping to get some guidance in regards to Org. Charts. I have taken some of the training, but am not finding the assistance I am looking for.

Hi @GerlingL, thanks for posting in the Lucid Community! I’m happy to help!

To get you started with org charts, I recommend reviewing these resources:

Are you encountering a specific problem with org charts? Would you mind providing a detailed description of what you’re hoping to achieve and what you’re experiencing? I’d be happy to take a closer look!

Good morning! Thank you for the response! I have taken a bit of the training so far, but I am in need of assistance in regards to creating conditional formatting, setting up specific colors, & including a key/masthead. A co-worker of mine who was previously going to assist me with this is no longer available, & I am up against a deadline.

Hi @GerlingL, thank you for your response!

Are you having trouble building out the org chart, or is your org chart already built out and ready to apply conditional formatting?

If you’ve already created the org chart and are looking to add conditional formatting, I’d recommend reviewing how to identify patterns automatically with conditional formatting in org charts, and the Add conditional formatting in Lucidchart article. Those two resources are great places to start and often answer many questions.

To create a conditional formatting rule:

  1. Click conditional-formatting-wand-icon.png the Conditional Formatting icon from the Primary Toolbar at the far left-hand side of the canvas.
  2. Click + Add rule.
  3. Type a name for the rule.
  4. Select "If" conditions. (more on that below)
  5. Select "Then" conditions.
  6. Click Save.

Below are the ‘if’ conditions to choose from, with detailed examples of each shown in this post

  • Text - Lucidchart looks at text on the shapes in your diagram to determine formatting
  • Shape type -  Lucidchart looks at the type of shape or object used in your diagram to determine formatting
  • Shape location - Lucidchart looks at whether a shape is or is not contained inside a swim lane or other container to determine formatting
  • Connected shapes - Lucidchart looks at the number of shapes an object is connected to in your diagram to determine formatting
  • Shape data - Lucidchart looks at data or information associated with the shapes you selected to determine formatting
  • Formula - use Lucidchart formulas to customize what is formatted

Do you know which of the above ‘if’ conditions you’d like to work with? Once you’ve selected an ‘if’ condition, you can select a ‘then’ condition to choose specific fill color, text color, border color, add an icon, etc.

If you’re not at the point where you’re ready to add conditional formatting, but instead you’re trying to build out your org chart, please let me know if there are any specific org-chart related questions you have. Happy to take a look!

Thank you! The Org. chart was previously built by another employee who is no longer with the company, & i inherited it. I am basically tasked with revamping the charts for all of the divisions. All of the conditional formatting will need to be changed, the color/sizing has changed, & the logo/masthead will now need to be included.

I am happy to share what i have so far & what it needs to look like.

Hi @GerlingL, thanks for your response!

If you’re managing/changing conditional formatting rules that have previously been created, you can find the list of rules by clicking the wand icon, which opens the conditional formatting menu and displays all previously created rules. (as shown below)

You can then RenameEditDuplicate, or Delete rules by clicking on the three dots to the right of the rule and selecting from the options. You can also Unapply the rule from here, which will keep the rule in the list to use/reapply again if desired, but unapply it from shapes in the document.

If you want to start over and create new conditional formatting rules, I recommend unapplying or deleting the rules. I then recommend using the steps in my message above to create new conditional formatting rules.

I hope this helps apply your needed changes! Let me know if you run into any trouble when going through these steps and I’d be happy to look at your document.

Thank you! I’m much more of a visual learner...I am better when someone drives & I shadow, & then I drive while they shadow me.

Hey @GerlingL, totally understand! Were the steps above helpful in getting your org chart as desired? Please let me know if you have any specific questions and I’d be happy to provide more detail.

If you’re having trouble making the changes, can you please send a temporary Support PIN for this document? This will allow me to take a closer look at your org chart. For more information on generating a Support PIN, check out this Help Center article. You can share the PIN in this same thread since it is only accessible by members of the Lucid support team.

Thank you!
