Connections collapsing in Mind Map

I’m having an issue with boxes in a different parent line collapsing away when I collapse a parent or child box in another line.

When I create a “Mind Map with Details” in Lucid Chart and draw additional connection points between a child of one parent box to a child of a different parent box, the child that is connected by the additional line collapses away when I collapse the first parent or child.

To explain:

I have a parent group A and B.  In each parent group I have child boxes of 1, 2, & 3.  The Mind Map automatically draws the connection between A1, A2, A3 or B1, B2, B3.  When I collapse parent A, the child boxes of A1, A2, & A3 collapse.  But when I manually draw a connection between A2 and B3 and then collapse parent A, now all the child boxes of group A as well as B3 collapse away.

How do I make it so that only the manual line that I drew collapses away between A2 & B3 and the B3 box doesn’t collapse away?

Hey @Kirsten P just following up here quickly! To clarify, when the nodes from the Mind Map are collapsed, they collapse every attached node indeed. However, I was curious about your specific experience hence why I wanted to have a closer look at your document.

As a workaround, you can use layers to create a collapsable chart. If that is a method you are interested in, I recommend following the directions in this Community Post as it will allow you to fully customize the flow of your diagram:

Hi @Kirsten P

The point you figured out is a known limitation in Lucidchart’s mind map functionality.

  • When you manually connect child nodes from different branches, collapsing the parent of one branch can also cause the connected node in another branch to collapse unexpectedly.

This occurs because Lucidchart interprets these manual connections as dependencies, linking the visibility state of both nodes, so when one branch collapses, the connected node may also be hidden, even if it belongs to a different parent group.

Hope this helps - Happy to help further!!
Thank you very much and have a great one!
Warm regards

Hi @Kirsten P, thanks for posting in the Community and thank you @Humas1985 for chiming in!

@Kirsten P would you mind sharing a few screenshots of your experience, as well as providing a temporary Support PIN for this document? This will allow me to take a closer look at the issue you’re experiencing. For more information on generating a Support PIN, check out this Help Center article.

Document Support PINs can only be used by the Lucid Support Team, so feel free to share it in this thread.

Thanks for your help and patience!

Here’s the support pin

And, a sanitized version of the Mind Map for the community is below.

Here’s the fully blown out Mind Map that shows the automated connections (solid line) and the manual connections made (dotted line)

Here’s the Mind Map with the ‘child detail’ minimized (yellow highlight).  Here you can see that the connections to the child boxes over to the left and below are now missing

@Kirsten P thank you for following up with this information! Would you mind pasting the Document Support PIN in this thread? It seems like the link you have provided is broken.

Thank you for your continued collaboration!

Hey @Kirsten P, apologies for the confusion. Could you please paste the PIN directly in this thread instead of providing a link? The PIN in the link is not valid. For more information on generating a Support PIN, check out this Help Center article.

Thanks so much!
