Change panning direction with scroll wheel click

That sort of works, but sometimes the scrollwheel moves things the wrong way and sometimes it moves things the right way. I think maybe I need to doubleclick that scrollwheel button and hold it down the second time? It’s very haphazard and counter-intuitive to me.

@Fred Boak Thanks for continuing this thread! Apologies for the frustration. Can you please confirm what navigation setting you have in place when you’re experiencing this behavior?

@Micah I’m not the original commenter but I believe they’re using Mouse or Auto. When you double click the scroll wheel and hold the second click, then drag the cursor around, it’ll pan you around the canvas. Basically it’s the same functionality as the Mouse’s “Right click and drag to pan” feature.

I do agree with them that it’s a bit counter-intuitive. Most apps allow panning by single-clicking the scroll wheel, rather than double-clicking or using the right mouse button. LucidChart does let you pan with a single-click on the scroll wheel but it goes in the opposite direction than you would expect.

@Dioti Thanks for this comment and insight! Just to make sure I’m understanding correctly - the fact that panning is enabled via a single-click on the scroll wheel is expected, but the direction of the panning is opposite of what’s expected?

@Dioti thanks for adding your comment and summarizing things - yes, that’s exactly my problem. I had no idea right-click would do any panning as to me right-click is always a context menu.

@Micah yes, that is correct.

@Fred Boak Thanks for confirming! This is very helpful feedback for our development team as they make improvements to our products. I hope that right-click + drag to pan is a helpful solution in the meantime - please let me know if you have additional questions here!

@Micah - Agree, panning is the opposite as expected when single middle clicking. However some users are likely used to and comfortable with this navigation style (not me!). Rather than requiring double-middle-click, a workaround for everyone would possibly be to have a setting for middle click behaviour.

This would be similar to how you can select what your left-click does:
[Select] || [Pan] || [Expand] || [LaserPointer] || [Freehand select]

An option to select/set what your middle-click does:
[Pan] → Identical behaviour to left click with pan selected
               (without having to double-middle-click)

[Scroll] → Identical behaviour to current middle click

Hi @MetalOctopus, thanks so much for your thoughtful feedback and proposed solution! Since the navigation mode settings that this thread was originally about doesn’t fully address this experience, I’ve broken these related comments off so that we can consider scrolling direction and a potential setting for this as separate feedback. Again, we appreciate your time and willingness to help us improve our products!
