Was going through the Intelligent Diagramming pathway and came across the concept of a diagram key. Why do I have to go through the hassle of creating a custom shape library, naming it, adding shapes to the library and naming them too only to create a diagram key which serves no purpose but to act like a legend?

I do get the point of creating a custom library. But for a diagram key - I can rather share the pre-existing page as a template to my collaborators with a rectangular box created as legend - with shapes copied from process flows and adding some text next to them.

Hi @rraghuvamsi

In Lucidchart, a diagram key plays a crucial role in enhancing clarity, standardization, and efficiency. By defining shapes and their meanings, you establish a consistent visual language across diagrams, ensuring collaborators interpret symbols uniformly. This is particularly beneficial in complex diagrams, where a key quickly explains industry-specific notations and symbols to viewers.

A diagram key also facilitates efficient onboarding of new team members and stakeholders, allowing them to grasp diagram components without extensive explanation. Custom shapes enable tailoring your visual language to specific project or organizational needs. Even experienced users benefit from a diagram key as a handy reference point, reducing cognitive load.

Including a diagram key adds polish and completeness to diagrams, making them suitable for formal documentation or client presentations. While creating a custom shape library and diagram key requires initial effort, it saves time and reduces confusion in the long run, especially for complex projects or large teams.

For simpler diagrams, a basic rectangular box legend can be an efficient alternative. The choice between a full custom library with a diagram key and a simpler legend approach depends on diagram complexity, audience, and symbol reuse across multiple diagrams.

Thank you very much and have a great one!
