Hello, I’m trying to update the tier leves in my org chart. It says “Inherited from Org Chart”, but when I try to update the teir, it is greyed out. I want to add more teirs and update team member’s tears. We have instances where different tiers/levels report into the same staff. Thank you.

Thanks for reaching out. This is a common scenario when working with org charts that are data-linked or using inherited structure settings.

When you see “Inherited from Org Chart”, it means the tier/level is being controlled by either:

  • The org chart’s auto-layout settings, or
  • A data source (e.g., CSV, Google Sheets, HRIS integration)

In this state, the field is locked at the shape level, so it can’t be edited manually.

This is the reason why the field is greyed out.

You can try to update via the data source. … If your org chart is data-linked:

  1. Locate the “Level” or “Tier” column in your dataset
  2. Add or modify tiers directly there
  3. Refresh the data in Lucidchart

This will automatically update the hierarchy and tiers.

Alternatively, if it is not data-linked:

  1. Select the org chart
  2. Open the Org Chart panel
  3. Look for layout or hierarchy settings controlling levels
  4. Modify how tiers are calculated

Hope this is helpful!

Also, for instances where different tiers/levels report into the same staff, this will need to be a manual adjustment. Please see link for for some more tips:
