Hi, I am listed as the owner of this Lucidchart document (see screenshot) yet when I try to change the location of the document from “shared with me” to a different folder, I receive an error message I don’t have permission to do so.
What setting do I need to change in order to move this document?

Hi @meghan.tighe! That's a frustrating situation! It's confusing when you're the owner of a document but are blocked from managing its location. Is it possible that it’s in a team/shared folder? Sometimes folder permissions override document ownership. The key issue is that a Lucidchart document will inherit the restrictions of the container it lives in. If that’s the case, it means it's located inside a folder that someone else (or your organization) controls.
You are the document owner, which gives you the right to edit, share, and transfer ownership of the document itself. But you might lack folder permissions. When a document is inside a shared folder or a Team Folder, the person who controls or owns that folder controls the ability to move files out of it. If the folder was only shared with you as a "Viewer" or if it is a corporate Team Folder restricted to Admins, you don't have the permission to modify the contents of that folder, which includes moving the file.
You have two primary ways to move the document: the quick workaround, or the permanent solution. This is the fastest way to get a movable version of the file immediately.
Go to your Lucid Home Page.
Hover over the document thumbnail.
Click the three-dot menu and select Duplicate.
Share it with all the relevant parties.
The new copy will be created in your personal "My Documents" space. Since you created it in your own folder, you will be the sole owner and can move, rename, or manage it without any restrictions.
If you must move the original file (to preserve the version history or link), find the folder owner. Determine who originally created and shared the folder that contains the document. Ask the folder owner or your Lucid Account Admin to grant you the necessary folder permissions (usually "Edit and Share") on the specific shared folder. Once you have this right, you can move the file out.
Let us know if making a copy resolves the issue for you!
Thank you! I”d like to avoid the copy route and not create a duplicate.
The document’s location is “shared with me” (I’m having an issue taking a screenshot). As a result I don’t think that is a folder from which I can get permissions, correct?
Hi @meghan.tighe, you are correct in your suspicion! "Shared with me" is not a physical folder from which you can get permissions; it's a filter or a view that simply shows all the documents that other users have explicitly shared with your account.
The document still has a technical "home"—a specific folder where the original creator (or another user) placed it. This is why it's receiving restrictions. That folder is likely a Shared Folder or a Team Hub folder.
To avoid creating a copy and to move the original:
Find the Folder's Origin: You need to determine which specific folder this document lives in. Sometimes, you can find this detail in the document's properties or by checking the sharing settings.
Find the Folder Owner: Once you know the folder, you must find out who originally created or manages that specific folder.
Request Folder Permissions: You will need to ask the folder owner to grant you the necessary folder-level permissions (such as "Edit and Share" access) on the container folder.
Once you have permission to modify the contents of that source folder, you should be able to move your document out to your personal "My Documents" space.
Thanks for posting in the community! As @Shira M mentioned, the first step is to identify the origin of the folder. Below, I’ve listed two ways to check where your document is located.
How to view your document's location:
Method 1:
Click the Lucidchart icon in the top-left corner of the screen.
From the drop-down menu, select Home.
This will take you to the Home page, where you can see the document’s location displayed at the top of the screen.
Method 2:
Click the three dots in the bottom-right corner of the file thumbnail.
From the drop-down menu, select Organize, then choose Move to.
A window will appear showing your document’s current location.
If your document is stored in a Team Folder, I recommend reviewing our Team Folders article for guidance on moving documents in and out of Team Folders, as well as how this impacts permissions. Additionally, you may find our Team hubs article helpful for understanding access to team documents.
Let us know if you have any further questions!
The document lives in a team I own, but it looks like the problem may be that the document type is “lucidchart shortcut”. How do shortcuts work differently?
Hi @meghan.tighe,
Thank you for providing that information that is very helpful! Based on the image you shared, it looks like you're on the right track with moving the document. Could you let me know exactly when the error appears? Does it happen after you click one of the dropdown menus and select the destination and click Move? If possible, please try the action again and share at what exact point the error message appears.
I tested the process on my end using a shortcut document and was able to complete the move successfully. I've included the full steps below with images.
Click the three dots in the bottom-right corner of the file thumbnail.
From the drop-down menu, select Organize, then choose Move to.
Click on the location where you'd like to move it. You'll see a dropdown menu with available options. Select your desired location, then click Move.
