Text in mermaid diagrams does not render in Google Docs

When I create diagram as code using the new mermaid functionality in Lucidchart, and then import it into a Google Doc using the official Lucidchart integration, the text on the diagram is not displayed in Google docs.

This was also reported here, but that question is marked as answered, without a solution to the text problem.

Example diagram:

stateDiagram-v2
[*] --> state1: The first state
state1 --> state2: The second state
state2 --> [*]: The end state
note right of state2
This is a note
on the right side
end note
The result in Google Docs

Update here to all the reports on this thread:

I’ve escalated this issue with our engineering team, and they are continuing to investigate this. I apologize again for the inconvenience this causes.

While this is being worked on, our teams have suggested this workaround: exporting your Mermaid diagram to a PNG/PDF and adding the file to Google Docs, and adding a link to the document. I acknowledge this is not the perfect solution, but I do hope that helps in the meantime.

I will update this thread as soon as I hear back about a fix. In the meantime, please follow along with this thread for updates, and post any additional questions or concerns below.

@asarkisov_pure Here are a few questions/steps:

  • Would you mind connecting to a different network to rule out any connection issues?
  • Could you also try opening the Google Doc/Slide/Sheet in an incognito window to rule out browser interference?
  • If you remove the diagram and then reinsert it does that resolve the issue?

Here’s a document that might be able to help you: https://help.lucid.co/hc/en-us/articles/11175888421780-Lucid-add-ons-for-Google-Docs-Sheets-and-Slides

If the issue persists after those steps please submit a support ticket via this form as troubleshooting this issue may require some sensitive information.

  1. This happens across multiple networks, with or without VPN for several users (everyone who tried across a couple teams in the company).
  2. This is consistent across different browsers, operating systems, and sessions.
  3. Nothing resolves the issue, all diagrams are like that. Except we found that C4 diagrams do have text, whereas flow diagrams do not.

Yep, same issue here. I will note that setting %%{init: {"flowchart": {"htmlLabels": false}} }%% in your diagram will restore text labels _outside of shapes_ but not the shapes themselves. Probably a bug in how lucid is rendering the embedded diagrams when inserted in the doc. I hope there’s a fix for this soon.

Facing the same issue across our organization. Sequence diagram text is showing fine, but all flow charts are not showing text in Google Docs. Using the latest version for Lucidchart from Google Workspace Marketplace. Tested on incognito window with same result.

Hi @jverne, I am sorry you’re having trouble here as well, and I’ve added your comment here to the report for our development team as well. Just for clarity, is your account experiencing this specifically on Mermaid-generated diagrams that are added to Google Docs, or across all Lucid diagrams?

Could you share a Technical Support PIN for your account? This may help our developers take a closer look at what’s going on. This PIN is safe to post in this thread because it is only accessible by members of the Lucid support staff. You can find steps for generating a Support PIN in this Lucid Help Center article: Generate a Lucid Support PIN

Thanks in advance for your help and patience here while our teams continue to investigate this.

PIN: iuTLO9zpwonZ4JelxZFVj0lMm19iKQ6oeC211750207

The issue only occurs with mermaid generated flow charts. I’ve verified that mermaid sequence diagrams and non-mermaid diagrams show as expected in a google doc.
