hello!

I’m a new user to lucid. I’ve noticed that I have two files that seem to exhibit different behavior with regard to rectangular containers.

In one diagram, which I think started life as a Flowchart template, allows for neat little black background titles above the container

Another one doesn’t have these titles and I can’t really find a way to add them.

When I select the containers in any case, Lucid reports they are both a “Rectangle Container”

My question is, why are they different? Is it because I started with a template for one of them?

Thanks --dave

@David.Hahn it sounds to me like one is a smart container and the other is a regular container.

Here is a link all about smart containers and how to use them: https://help.lucid.co/hc/en-us/articles/14690463943572-Visualize-data-with-Smart-Containers

This link is about containers in general: https://help.lucid.co/hc/en-us/articles/14974422704916-Use-Containers-to-organize-and-hide-content-in-Lucidspark

Hi @David.Hahn, thank you for your post! If you’re not using a smart container like @aparrish mentioned in their comment above, it sounds like you might be using a regular container shape vs a UML Rectangle container shape.

The two containers actually belong to different shape libraries and it’s likely that the template you used had shapes from a different library.

The top one is from the ‘Containers’ shape library under the ‘Flowchart shapes/Containers’ category. Whereas the second one is from the “UML Use Case” or “UML State/Activity” libraries which is under the “UML” category.

If this is not the case for you, would you mind sharing a screenshot of the shapes so that we can take a closer look? Let us know if you have any questions!

Thanks for the reply! I think you’re on the right track here. Here are some screenshots.

If it is just a container from a differently library, that’s cool. I just have to remember to use the container I like the most 🙂 I was just mostly confused because I couldn’t readily tell a difference in the layout flyout on the right-hand side. They’re both just described as “Rectangle Container”..

Without label:

Container without Label at the top

Container with lable at the top.

Container with label at the top

Did some more digging here. I think the document in the first screenshot came from an imported Visio doc. The second was a native lucidchart doc..

I’m thinking maybe the import process overrode or otherwise replaced the rectangle container..

Hi @David.Hahn, thank you for sharing that information. It looks like I had my container shapes mixed up in my last reply - my apologies! The one from the ‘Containers’ shape library under the ‘Flowchart shapes/Containers’ category is the one you are looking for which allows you to add a title.

As a side note - you can quickly find all our different container shapes by clicking the containers icon in the left toolbar:

If your document with the title-less container was imported from Visio, it’s likely that our import tool recognised the container as the UML one and recreated using the container which doesn’t have a way to add the black title tag.

I hope this helps! Please feel free to let me know if you’d like me to take a closer look at your documents to confirm which one it is, or if you have any additional questions!

Thank you for the engagement! I think I have a much better grasp on containers now. I do agree with your theory on the Visio import doc. Let’s go with that :)

Thanks again! --dave

Glad to hear that was helpful, @David.Hahn 🙌

Feel free to create a new post if you have any questions or topics you’d like to discuss - we love hearing from everyone! :)
