Is there a good way to have selections for many layers
I have utilized buttons and actions for smaller diagrams but the diagram I’m working on has a lot of layers (20 and counting) and making a button for each one would not only be overwhelming to create but also for users wanting to navigate the network diagram. It would take up a lot of space as well.
For now I’ve just told users to use the layers button at the bottom right, but once it gets to a wider audience I’d like to find a solution that’s easier for people to choose. One thought I had was to have a drop down menu as a box on the diagram that lets you select the layer you want.
Any one have ideas for this or run into something similar with your own diagrams?

Hi @lucidjoe
Drop down menu as a box is a great thought for that - Create a dropdown-like experience using shapes and actions. Design a dropdown shape with text, add layer options below, and assign actions to toggle corresponding layers on and off.
Other options are - Building a dedicated navigation panel with buttons or shapes for each layer. Organize related layers using grouping, nested layers, or sub-layers for complex diagrams.
Also, by making use of hotspot, to create interactive elements that toggle layers. Place hotspot shapes over desired areas, configure actions to show or hide specific layers upon click, and enhance user engagement.
We also look forward to hearing from other community members and associates, who may have alternative suggestions that could better address your requirements.
Hope this helps - Happy to help further!! Thank you very much and have a great one! Warm regards
thanks for the reply @Humas1985
Unfortunately, this wasn’t what I was looking for, your suggestion is my current solution I’m using.
For reference, a dropdown menu is something that looks like this
There is no “dropdown shape” available to select in Lucidchart. Another idea was to use the diagram key shape and put all the layer names there, then when you select a layer it will reveal it. This is a network diagram showing a ton of VLANs and making indiviual shapes for each VLAN would take up too much space.
Thanks for sharing your feedback, we should also think of custom solutioning, meantime we will wait to hear from other members who have any ideas for the use case.
Hi @lucidjoe,
My recommendation would be like the ones you and Humas have mentioned, to create shapes and label the layers they coordinate with. You can then add an action to the shapes to Toggle the designated layers.
If you would like for their to be a drop down menu shape, I would recommend posting this as an idea in our Product Feedback section.
To do this, please first search the Product Feedback section of this community (with the filter Topic Type = Idea) to see if it’s already been submitted. If so, please add any additional details you’d like and upvote the request - this consolidation helps to refine feedback and properly capture the popularity of the request.
If no one has submitted this idea yet, please create one of your own and be sure to include details about your use case or what you’d like to see in this experience. This will also allow other users with similar requests to discover and upvote it, then add details of their own.
