I’m using containers to group things in a technical architecture diagram, and I need the lines to go to the containers, not the items in the container. Is there a way to use smart lines with containers? I’m not able to get the container to light up in the same way a shape will when dragging a line to it.

I’m also wondering if I can change regular lines to smart lines in bulk.

@Sam Gechter For your first question, someone else already asked about that. You can view the thread here:

Hey @aparrish thanks for the links.

The first one seems to be talking about ER diagrams, not containers.

The second one is from six years ago, but the same issue. I asked a followup question there, thanks.

Hi @Sam Gechter, thanks for posting in the Lucid Community! Thanks @aparrish for your help here, I’m happy to take a closer look!

If you select ‘View’, then ensure that ‘Enable line connections’ is selected, all your lines and shapes should behave as smart lines. Does that result in the experience you’re hoping for?

@Sam Gechter Are you using Lucidchart or Lucidspark? Would you mind verifying what type of container you are using? Are you using the regular container shapes or smart containers in Lucidchart, or perhaps the Frame or Container shape in Lucidspark? Just want to ensure we’re talking about the same shapes.

Hey there,

So I’m using Lucidchart. I’m just using basic containers:

My understanding of smart lines is that if you draw a line from one object to another, when you get to the second you hover over the middle, it lights up, and then you release, and you’ve got a smart line that will automatically adjust it’s connection point as you reposition the second object. This doesn’t seem to work for containers. Drawing a line from one container to another, the second container doesn’t ever light up, and so the connection point is fixed. “Enable Line Connections” is selected.

Hi @Sam Gechter, thanks for verifying which containers you are using and I apologize for the delay here!

You are correct about the functionality of smart lines, and after testing on my end, I am able to recreate what you’ve described with containers. Unfortunately, I don’t believe using smart lines with containers is currently supported in Lucid, but I am triple-checking with the development team to ensure that this is not a bug.

I am sorry for any inconvenience here, and I will update you here as soon as I hear back!

Hi @Sam Gechter, my sincere apologies for the delay here as I’ve raised this internally. Our product team is taking a closer look at this and they’d like to know which containers you are using.

Would you mind specifying which of the below containers you are using and hoping to have the smart line functionality?
