Hello everyone,
I'm trying to determine whether anyone else has experienced a change in Lucidchart's layer and hotspot behavior over the last few weeks.
I have a fairly sophisticated single-page diagram that relies heavily on layers and layer actions. The document contains:
- A base layer
- A dedicated layer containing hotspot objects used for layer actions
- Multiple additional layers that are shown and hidden through those actions
This design has been in production and working reliably for more than six months.
Previous Behavior
Historically:
- My hotspot shapes were transparent (no fill and no line).
- I could simply hover over the hotspot area and click to trigger a layer action.
- The hotspot layer was positioned near the bottom of the layer stack (typically second from the bottom).
- Layer actions continued to work regardless of how many visible layers existed above the hotspot layer.
This allowed me to seamlessly toggle layers on and off while navigating the diagram.
Current Behavior
Over the last few weeks, the behavior appears to have changed.
I am now seeing the following:
- On my MacBook, I have to hold Option + Shift before the hotspots become visible and clickable. They appear as green squares and look terrible.
- Transparent hotspots no longer respond as they previously did.
- Layer actions only appear to work consistently when the hotspot layer is placed at the very top of the layer hierarchy.
- If another visible layer is positioned above the hotspot layer, that layer intercepts the click and prevents the hotspot from firing.
- This creates a usability problem because a layer action may turn on a layer that subsequently blocks access to the hotspot needed to turn that layer off again.
Additional Testing
To rule out document-specific issues, I created a brand-new Lucidchart document with only a few layers and test hotspots.
I observed the exact same behavior.
Because the problem can be reproduced in a new document, it does not appear to be corruption or a configuration issue specific to my original file.
I have tested and verified the behavior is the same across Safari and Firefox browsers, including private browser windows.
Questions
- Has Lucidchart recently changed how hotspots or layer actions are handled?
- Has click priority or layer hit-testing behavior changed?
- Are transparent hotspot objects still considered a supported design pattern?
- Is there a setting that restores the previous interaction model?
- Has anyone else experienced this behavior on Mac?
- Has anyone found a workaround that allows hotspots to remain clickable even when other layers are visible above them?
At this point, the behavior feels very much like a regression or a recent change in how layer interactions are processed. I'm interested in hearing whether others can reproduce this and whether Lucid has provided any guidance or fixes.
Thanks in advance for any insight.
