I created a layer and dragged a custom icon onto that layer and suddenly there are 2 layers with the same name. I can toggle visibility individually but if I remove one they both get deleted. It's confusing to a user of my template and its weird.

Hi @Mark E

This may be happening because the custom icon is being inserted as a grouped or system-generated element rather than a separate layer object.

  • Even though it appears as two layers with the same name, they may be linked to the same underlying objects, which would explain why deleting one removes both.

A possible workaround is to assign objects to layers through the Layers panel instead of drag-and-drop insertion

Hope this helps !!

Hi @Mark E, thank you for posting in the community! Just following with some additional troubleshooting questions to assist further. To make sure I understand the issue fully and can point you in the right direction, would you mind providing me with the following information so I can take a closer look?

  • A brief description of how the custom icon was created.
  • Does this happen in a new blank document when adding this icon to the canvas?
  • A screenshot of the issue (if possible)

Thank you your help and patience! Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

@Leianne C - I created the icon by combining some I already had (dragged from the left) with a new imported SVG. I used a scratch, single layer document for this purpose and the layer name isn’t the same as the new duplicate that got created.

I did not try a blank document. I think I did upload a screen-shot of the double layers.

@Humas1985 … how can I “assign objects to layers through the Layers panel” when the object is not on the canvas? As soon as a I drag it there, boom, I have 2 layers.
