Difficult to create paragraph spacing in Lucid using Shift+Enter

Hi, I am writing to report an issue with how text formatting currently behaves in Lucidchart.

Previously (a few months ago?), using Shift+Enter allowed me to create a line break (soft return) without triggering paragraph spacing. This was very useful for keeping text tight within a single block.

Currently, Shift+Enter adds the same vertical gap as a regular Enter. This makes it impossible to distinguish between a new line and a new paragraph, which disrupts the layout of my diagrams.

Could you please check if this is a bug or a recent change in settings? I would like to have the "soft return" functionality back to avoid unwanted spacing between lines.

Hi @Aleksandra Skóbel! It is definitely strange that Shift+Enter is suddenly mimicking the spacing of a full paragraph for you, as that shortcut is specifically designed to keep text blocks tight.

To help narrow this down, I'd love to know which browser and operating system you’re currently using. It is also worth checking if this behavior happens across all your documents or if it’s just happening in one specific file or template. Sometimes, browser extensions like Grammarly or ad-blockers can hijack keyboard shortcuts, so it would be a great first step to see if the problem still occurs when you test Lucidchart in an incognito or private window.

One thing to check right away is the Text Options menu in your top toolbar. It’s possible that the document's default "Line Spacing" or "Paragraph Spacing" values have been adjusted. If the line spacing is set significantly higher than 1.0, or if there is a "Space After" value applied to the paragraph, even a soft return will look like a massive gap. Ensure your line spacing is set to 1.0 and that the paragraph spacing icons are set to 0 to see if that closes the gap.

Check out the Lucidchart Support guide on Adding and Styling Text. If the settings look correct but the issue persists, it might be a deeper rendering bug that needs their technical team's eyes.

Hi, @Shira M, I am using Google Chrome (as always) on Windows 11. I have already tested this behavior in an Incognito window with all browser extensions disabled, and the issue persists—nothing changed.

I am well aware of how line spacing works and I use it frequently. In this case, the text is clearly inheriting the paragraph spacing settings when I use Shift+Enter, even though my line spacing is typically set to 1.0 or 1.1.

the paragraph spacing icons are set to 0 to see if that closes the gap.

To clarify: I still want to use paragraph spacing and create those gaps using the Enter key. However, I want Shift+Enter to remain a simple line break that bypasses those spacing settings. My goal is to keep the ability to have distinct paragraphs while still being able to wrap text tightly when needed.

Update: it appears that every time I use Shift+Enter, a paragraph spacing is automatically added. I managed to manually reset the spacing for that specific line to zero, but this is a tedious workaround and not the intended behavior.

In my opinion, this should not be the default behavior. It disrupts the standard workflow where Shift+Enter is expected to function as a simple line break.
