How to add connection "pins" to custom shape in Lucidchart
I was attempting to draw some CMOS circuits. Unfortunately there wasn't any ready-made stencils for CMOS.
Hence I drawn a PMOS and NMOS just to try out. It was easy :)
But may I know how add "connection pin" to my custom shape? I mean the small red bubble which I can drag connection lines out of it.

Hi- The connection bubble will automatically be around areas on your new custom shapes. You should be able to draw one out from edges of the shape, but since it is a custom shape it may not connect to all parts of the shape.
Ultimately, custom connection points aren’t currently supported in Lucidchart. If you’re willing to share, we’d love to hear more details about your use case or what you’d like to see in this experience within this thread. I’ve also converted this post to an idea so that it’s visible to others within the Product Feedback section of the community - from here, they can upvote it and add details of their own.
Finally, for more information on how Lucid manages feedback via this community, take a look at this post:
Good news for me! I found the MOS transistors stencil. They were mixed up with the Bi-polar transistors.
Bad news is my custom shape could be comprise of "group" of lines. Lines don't come with connection bubble.
I know other shapes like square do have connection bubble and still connectable after blended into a custom shape.
Hi- When attaching one end of a line to another end of a line you may not see a connection bubble. However you should see the option to connect when doing one end of a line to the middle of a line like in my image below.
You can also create a free-standing line by pressing 'L'. This is a way to draw a line from any area on your canvas. I hope this helps!
Hi
I have kind of the same problem. I have added some images of some network equipment where there are some ports on. I would like to add some pin point so I can connect the images in a diagram using lines that comes out of the ports on the image.
How do I do that ?
Best Regards
Esben
Hi Esben
Thanks for reaching out! Make sure "Enable Line Connections" is turned on in your View settings and then you should be able to drag lines from shapes.
I think Esben wanted to have the línes connect to a custom place inside the image and i am having the same issue
Hi Killian
Thanks for posting in the Lucidchart Community and I'm sorry you're experiencing trouble. I recommend that when you are creating your custom shape you either add a line to your image or add a shape such as a small circle to indicate where you want lines to connect. Unfortunately, there is not currently a way to customize where lines connect on custom shapes. However, we're always looking for ways to improve Lucidchart and your feedback is the best way to do that. Do you mind upvoting this request and adding any additional details about your use case to this thread? These ideas are passed on to our development team for future product improvements! Thanks and I apologize for any inconvenience.
I was trying to get started with lucid chart and ran into this same problem. Do you have a set of generic shapes I did not fined with multiple connectos. For example if I wanted to show 24 lines coming out of one shape is there an easy way to do that?
Hello Tony
Thank you for posting in the Lucidchart community! Unfortunately there are no shapes in Lucidchart's default shape libraries similar to the one you're describing but you can add lines to any shape and should be able to add 24 lines to the shape you choose to use. As mentioned above you can also create custom shapes to indicate where you would like lines to connect but unfortunately cannot customize where lines connect on custom shapes. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.
HI Lucid chart has this changed now i have some custom shapes that i use and it is very dull not being able to have this function.
Hi Tim thanks for commenting in our community! Yes this feature has changed with our updated UI. We love to hear suggestions on how we can improve our product
Whittney C
I have adopted Lucid Chart as a replacement for the hugely expensive (relatively) MS Visio package. The only feature that is NOT apparent to me that VISIO does by default is allow you to create custom shapes with "pins" or "connection points" on the shape as a defined entity. Unless I am doing something wrong the above mentioned solutions from before 12/2019 don't create a logical and then graphical relationship between a line and the so that the connection point drags the line and re-routes it in real-time as is does from the Lucid provided shapes. Also when you hover on the "shape bubble" there are red dots at the midpoints of the sides of the bounding box which rarely line up with where we want to have an actual connection point and snaps the cursor to that point in preference to the line object that you actually want to connect to.
You mentioned that this feature has changed in the updated UI. What is the change that enabled the behavior that we are looking for and where can we learn how to use that?
Hi @robert d thank you for continuing this post! Unfortunately adding custom connection points to objects is not currently supported in Lucidchart. The UI change that Whittney refers to has to do with how the built-in connection points appear within Lucidchart - apologies for any confusion! However we're always looking for ways to improve Lucidchart and your feedback is the best way for us to do that.
As a workaround we have seen users add connections points by adding a small shape to the desired connection point and grouping the shapes together. If you use this workaround I would recommend saving the adjusted shapes as custom shape library for easy access.
Thanks for your request and I apologize for any inconvenience this causes you. Hope this helps!
