Unable to resize (shrink) a diagram

Hello everyone,

A coworker shared a LucidChart diagram with me that has an unusually large canvas size, even though it contains a relatively small number of shapes. Ideally, this diagram should fit on a landscape Letter-size page. I am able to set the canvas size to Letter/Landscape, so that is not the problem. The problem is with scaling the diagram itself.

When I try to scale it down, I select all objects (Ctrl+A), set the font size to Auto and drag a corner handle to resize. The shapes themselves shrink as expected, some fonts scale but others only partially scale—and at inconsistent rates. After a certain point, text remains disproportionately large compared to the shapes. Additionally, connector lines do not appear to resize at all.

Could you please advise on the best way to scale an entire diagram so that shapes, text, and lines all resize proportionally? My goal is to fit the diagram onto a Letter-size canvas while keeping it fully editable.

Thank you for your assistance!

Hi @Paul Janssen, and welcome to the Lucid Community!

As you noticed, click and dragging a corner then trying to scale does not work well sometimes, especially with a mix of text on the shape and using a text object. Since you were able to modify the document size, you were close to a solution that may work -- try using the fit to page and/or content scale options. This will ensure everything scales together. If you’re just trying to scale a few objects and have more items on the screen, you will likely need to create a separate document, perform the scaling there, then copy/paste or import that back into your original document.

I will list out the steps for anyone else that runs into this 😊

  1. Right click anywhere on the board canvas and select Document Settings
  2. Uncheck infinite canvas if enabled
  3. Change the document size to Letter
  4. Change the format to Landscape
  5. Click fit-to-page if you want to scale to the entire letter
  6. Change the value up or down in the Content scale % to get everything to the scale you want

Let me know if that works!  Here is more information around document settings that may be helpful: Adjust document and board settings – Lucid

Cheers,

Eric
