Thanks for sharing. I understand exactly what you are describing because the same thing happened to me, and I already reported it as a bug to the team in charge of that functionality. This actually happens when you Shift+Click or Ctrl+Click the border of your selection. If you can deselect your background shape by clicking it without clicking too close to the border of your selection, it should work. Please let me know if that works for you.

thanks for your reply - however your workaround helps a bit, even if it is not working exactly like you described it. I click on the shape body not too close to the border and then I have to move the mouse outside of the shape in order to deselect it.

I am seeing this bug as well. The workaround proposed by Lance worked for me. Instead of clicking on the shape border, clicking somewhere near the border worked to de-select the shape.
It was a little frustrating to figure out and wasted about 15-20 minutes for me.
