Sharing by email doesn't work invite is never sent

I am trying to share a diagram with some colleagues hopefully by inviting using the Email option.

When I add their email address and select the appropriate access I get the "Could not send invitation. ...." message when I press the "Invite" button.

The colleagues I wanted to invite are visible in the "Collaborators" overview but they never received any email invite.

I also tried to invite my personal gmail-account - same result ....
