Hi, there.

When I export a selection of shapes to transparent PNG (or plain PNG or even to PDF), everything is there in the resulting file, except for the shape shadows.

This happens with all shape shadows in the document, no matter the selection, and everything else turns out perfectly aside from that.

I tried the following as per other similar issues’ suggested workarounds without success:

  • Using Incognito mode and clearing the browsing caches before exporting the shapes selection
  • Grouping all shapes in the selection and then exporting the resulting shape group
  • Copying all selected shapes to a new Lucid Chart document and then exporting it

This doesn’t happen with SVG export though, but I cannot use that format for what I’m doing and I don’t have access to an SVG-to-PNG converter internally in my company, so I need PNG exports to work properly.

I’m using Google Chrome (Version 138.0.7204.50 (Official Build) (64-bit)) for Windows 11.

Thanks.

Hi @diegoroda

The shadow wouldn’t export as the shadow is on being cast onto the canvas

To learn more - Help! Image Shadows don't show when exported to PDF | Community

Although this specifically refers to images in a PDF export, the reasoning applies identically to shape shadows in PNG exports, if you’re exporting only a selection, the rendering context doesn’t include the canvas area required for the shadows to appear correctly

Hope this helps - Happy to help further!!
Thank you very much and have a great one!
Warm regards

Hi Huma! Thanks for your quick response and the explanation of why that happens.

This sounds a bit odd though. If shape shadows are only cast onto the canvas, why am I seeing them projected onto the shapes that are immediately behind the shape I’m shadowing? Wouldn’t those be hidden behind all the layers of shapes that I have on top of the canvas? Besides, like I said in my previous post, the selection export to SVG format indeed shows the shadows, so why is the canvas shown there but not on a PNG/PDF? That’s inconsistent.

How can I make the shadows appear in the exported diagram? Is there a way to include the shadows or the canvas in the export to correct this behavior?

If there are no workarounds, how can I report a bug? I thought this was the place for that.

Thanks again, for the support.
