Hello there - is it possible to add a pop up that shows what the external link address is without having to open the link?

Thanks for reaching out I'm happy to help. At this point we don't have an option that allows someone to hover over a link and see the URL to the external link. However you can add a note to the hyperlink text by right clicking on the text and selecting "Add Note." You can post the URL in this note and have access to viewing it from both editing and presentation modes. Please let me know if you have any questions.
