After much searching I finally found the answer to my question "If you are adding a text label by double-clicking on a line however the padding feature does not apply. If you would like to use the padding feature with a text label you will have to create the label by dragging out a shape from the toolbox and placing it on the line." The process as described above is a workaround. This behavior (padding functionality) should also apply to those text labels added by double-clicking on a line.

Hey Ashley

Thank you for posting in the Lucid community! Our sincere apologies for the delayed response on this thread - I wanted to follow up in case this answer may still be useful to you and to provide a solution for other users who see this thread in the future.

Thank you for your request! We're always looking for ways to improve Lucidchart and your feedback is the best way for us to keep developing a useful and effective product. If you would please let us know about your feedback by posting an “Idea” in the community.

We would also love to hear additional detail about your use case or see an example of what you're hoping to achieve in the thread below. Additionally if you've discovered a workaround to achieve something similar in the meantime we'd love to hear about it! Thanks for your request!

Okay @Phillip W The link in your response on this now just links back into the same community forum, so I’m assuming that a year ago, you had a form, but now you do not.

I agree with @Ashley D that padding on text for lines is an expected feature. The workaround is inappropriate garbage.

At a fundamental level, your product attempts to duplicate existing products such as Visio and OmniGraffle. People do actually use all of these features and have used them for years. This literally limits the ability to deploy this as a diagramming tool within enterprises.

I think you can tell that It is shocking to me this isn’t available, given the number of competitors who offer it, the history of this space, etc.

Hey there @tomseago -- thanks for keeping this thread going! Apologies if the process for submitting an idea is confusing. Here is the link where you can create a topic and submit an idea to our Product Feedback forum. If you take a look at the Feedback and Feature Requests post here, you’ll find out how to submit a feature request as well as how Lucid evaluates feedback and responds.

As for the feature mentioned in the above post, adding padding to text on a line is, indeed, possible. If you double click on the line, add text, then navigate to the Text options tab of the top toolbar, you’ll be able to adjust the padding to your liking.

Hope these resources help!

This doesn’t help.  Even in the screenshot that has been posted, the padding option is greyed out.  This is exactly what I get when I double-click a label on a line, and I am not able to edit the padding value.

Hey @Mick Mason -- thanks for posting! Yes, you may not be able to use the padding formatting option precisely, however, you can use the options around the padding to give the text a similar effect. You may have to crank these numbers up pretty high, but this works as a substitute for the proper padding effect you are looking for.

Hope this helps!

Hi @Mick Mason, thanks for continuing this thread. While Phillip’s suggestion remains the best workaround, the formal request that Tom submitted to the Product Feedback space of the community can be found here. I encourage you to upvote it and if you’re willing, share additional details about your use case or what you’d like to see in this experience. For the sake of clarity, I am going to merge these threads together to centralize the conversation and more effectively collect feedback. Thank you for your feedback!
