Hello I am trying to build an org chart where I have an employee reporting to multiple supervisors. For example a medical assistant will report to 2 or 3 physician assistants or a physician assistant will report to two doctors. Is there a way to use the import feature to automatically create this kind of chart. For example if I have two rows with the medical assistant one row reporting to one person and another row reporting to another will this properly build the org chart?
Hello thank you for posting in the Lucid Community! Due to the programming of our org chart shapes there are some limitations to how our org charts can be formatted. However there are few workarounds I can provide. Below are two options we have had success with to workaround the formatting limitations.
Adding connections and lines outside of the org chart editor:
- To exit editing the org chart group press esc.
- Next hover over the org chart shape/employee tile until you see the red dot and pull the line from the shape to where you would like it to connect.
- You can adjust the line after making the connection.
Another option I want to share is done by placing a tile next to one of your reporting doctors (add an employee) and using the line tool to connect the two doctors. This option will allow for the physician assistant to be built out under one manager but keeps both managers at the top of the chart.
My last recommendation is to create the managers tiles outside of the Org Charts grouping. This process is a little more tedious but I personally prefer it.
- For this option start by clicking on a single Org Chart employee tile copy the single tile (To select a single tile click directly on the specific tile two or three times or until an edit box is around only that tile)
- Click outside of your org charts border
- Paste duplicate tile twice.
- Once you have done this you can then move the duplicate tiles around freely outside of the Org Chart's auto grouping.
- Once in the desired place use the line tool to draw lines to the "Doctors" tile. I have attached a short video for better reference.
Thank you for the response! So ultimately the there is no way to use the import data function to show a employee reporting to multiple supervisors without intervening the org chart manually? Also I do not see the short video you have attached.
Correct because of formatting limitations there currently is no way for imported data to place an employee under two separate supervisors on Lucidchart. Once your data has been imported you can then manually make these adjustments outside of the standard Org Chart formatting. Apologies for not providing the video in my original response I just realized the file was too large. I will send you a separate email with this video!
Thank you so much for your help!
I too am experiencing this issue. This may be something you can try to improve upon in future updates. My suggestion would be to add a way for it to recognize a cell with multiple supervisor IDs separated by commas.
Hi Savannah
We really appreciate your ideas and suggestions - I've converted this post to an idea in our Product Feedback space so that others can upvote it and comment details about their own use case for this. In the meantime please check out this post with a workaround for how to show an employee with two managers.
Thank you for your feedback!
Hi Lucid,
There doesn’t appear to have been a fix developed despite this chain going back 2 years.
The fixes suggested above don’t seem to work for me and the post in the pinned reply doesn’t work.
How can I have two supervisors for an individual?
Hi
I would recommend checking out this community post about how to address this issue!
