What if we could merge a row in the dynamic table in order to create headings that you could then create sections? That way we can use the dynamic table to create something like in the image below. We could use the sticker bank to add a checkmark in specific cells/squares. We could alter the merged row headings to become Christmas and Birthday for a gift shopping checklist. This would be useful with Christmas season approaching and for anyone who has additional birthday shopping between November and January. Or you could alter the merged row headings to become the rooms in your home for a cleaning checklist. Or the different types of food for a shopping checklist. I know that we can choose a color then choose fill row but having a visual plus a verbal way (through the use a merge row feature) to break the dynamic table down into sections would be useful.
Thank you for your time. Bye.

Hi Patrick,
Great idea for improving dynamic tables, and thank you for the detail in how you would use it. We have converted this post to an idea. Also, if you don’t need the “dynamic” part of the dynamic table (snapping sticky notes/shapes into the cells and auto-resizing to fit them, Jira import, etc), you can use a normal table that includes this functionality.
Is there a quicker way to select the whole row in a table instead of selecting the first cell then holding shift while selecting every single cell comprising of the row one at a time? In the dynamic table you can just select the row header cell and it will select the whole row at the same time.
What if you introduced the six-dot hamburger button in front of a row in order to select the whole row? That way we could also use that same button to rearrange the order of rows too.
There is not a way to select the whole row quicker like in a dynamic table. The product manager over this area will see your ideas now that this post is in the “Idea” category. Thank you for the suggestions!
If we can’t merge a row in the dynamic table what if you introduced the ability to add a heading or a section title between rows just like it shows in the self-care checklist image attached? For example, each column would be: todo, doing and done while each row heading would be the name of an individual but adding a heading or section title would be Team A, Team B and Team C. Or with Christmas shopping approaching each row would be an individual’s name but we could group them into Family, Co-Workers, Friends and Relatives. We can continuously add row after row until it becomes one long stream but introducing headings or section titles in between allows them to become manageable chunks and more visually ordered.
This is what I am referring to. I had to use a rectangle shape then extend it from the row heading to the far right or off the dynamic table from the right and extend it to the far left to fill the whole row then I could adjust the two sides to fit the border of the dynamic table. One wrong move and that purple placeholders in a cell will be activated and the rectangle will fit inside of it- try again. It's like playing that board game Operation where you can’t touch the sides- zap. This method is time consuming and tedious
This is what I am referring to. I built this with three containers and shapes. The issue with this is that you can’t rearrange the columns or rows, you can’t add more columns or rows and each “cell” has a fixed size so you can’t add as many sticky notes as you want. Once I created this it’s now “perfect” so I can’t add more without ruining it and putting it back together. Adding rows headings to the dynamic table would be a timesaver.
I tried stacking one dynamic table above another and then fitting a rectangle between the two overlapping the column headings of the lower one since I didn’t need it. But it comes at the expense of the columns going beyond the length of the rectangle heading when I start adding more than one sticky note to a cell or adding more columns. The second row of the top dynamic table will also overlap the rectangle heading when I move one sticky note below another in a cell.
By designing something similar to this you have to essentially leave it alone because it’s not functional. For example, if I wanted to add another row under the self improvement heading it would automatically overlap the mental/emotional heading. By adding headings or section titles to the dynamic table feature it would dynamically adjust the table to accommodate the users needs.
I designed this with the table feature. Drawbacks: - you can’t rearrange the order of individual rows to make it a higher or lower priority. -cells only auto-size for text and not sticky notes which means you can’t add multiple tasks per cell. -the bullet list option can only be applied to one line of text in a cell which means you can’t actually create a bullet list. -you can’t create a checklist for each line of text per cell to then create a sense of completion. This feature is exclusive to the notes feature. -you can’t select a whole row at the same time so you have to manually select each cell compromising the row until the whole row is selected. This is time consuming.
@patrickpereira1988 Thank you for the additional feedback and providing these visuals!
Allowing users to merge a row or introducing row headings/sections provides an alternative to using the database table in Notion and grouping rows.
On top of that we get the tactile feeling of using sticky notes with the dynamic table instead of just typing text into a table view of a database.
Allowing users to merge a row or introducing row headings/sections is a way to evolve the dynamic table and continue to provide new functionality that can open new possibilities.
