Hello Lucid Community members!

I’m a product manager for a team working on Mermaid diagram-as-code in Lucidchart.

As we build better support for Mermaid in Lucidchart, we want to understand how you use Mermaid in your workflow, where Lucidchart is currently involved in that workflow, and how we can improve so that Lucidchart can be integrated more seamlessly into your workflow.

Goals:

  • Understand how and why you use Mermaid diagram-as-code
  • See if/how Lucid is currently used in your work with Mermaid
  • Learn how Lucid could improve your diagram-as-code workflow
  • Collect feedback on what you would ideally be able to do with Mermaid in Lucidchart

💡 Some Discussion Starters 💡

🧜‍♂️ Where is the initial mermaid code coming from?

  • Is it committed to your repository?
  • Are you using a tool to generate it?

🧜‍♂️ Once the mermaid is imported into Lucidchart, what types of things do you hope to be able to do with it?

  • Add and delete shapes and lines?
  • Change colors and styling?
  • Modify layout?

🧜‍♂️ Once the diagram looks the way you want it to in Lucid, what do you want to be able to do with it?

  • Share the diagram with someone else?
  • Present to someone else?
  • Collaborate with other stakeholders? –  Name their titles.
  • Embed the diagram somewhere else?
  • Export and commit the modified mermaid code back into your repository?

🧜‍♂️ Which types of mermaid diagrams would you like to be able to use?

  • flowchart, sequence, class, ERD, state diagram, mindmap, C4 diagram, gantt, requirement diagram, user journey, pie chart, quadrant chart, gitgraph diagram, timeline
  • Are any of these diagrams more commonly used than others?

🧜‍♂️ What is the lifespan of the mermaid diagram? How is it being used again after the initial creation and collaboration?

  • Do you refer to it again in the future?
  • Is it used by others, and if so, how?
  • If the diagram isn’t used again, does the mermaid code in the repo get used/referred to in the future? When, why? (examples are welcome)

🧜‍♂️ What are the most painful aspects of this workflow? What is the single most painful aspect?

🧜‍♂️ What do you wish Lucid would change or improve to make this workflow better for you?

  • Rank your wishlist from most desirable to least desirable.

Where is the initial mermaid code coming from?

  • It starts as something that is generated from coding tools

Once the mermaid is imported into Lucidchart, what types of things do you hope to be able to do with it?

  • I hope to be able to change the shapes and interact with it as if I had built it by hand in Lucid.

Once the diagram looks the way you want it to in Lucid, what do you want to be able to do with it?

  • I hope to be able to use all current functionality availble with diagrams I created in via the UI.

Which types of mermaid diagrams would you like to be able to use?

  • Flowchart would be the most useful to begin with.

What is the lifespan of the mermaid diagram? How is it being used again after the initial creation and collaboration?

  • I use it to get started with building the diagram so I don’t have to start from nothing.  I intend to update it and make it right after bringing it into Lucid.

What are the most painful aspects of this workflow? What is the single most painful aspect?

  • Currenly I have convert and import it as a .csv which is annoying and is somewhat lossy.

What do you wish Lucid would change or improve to make this workflow better for you?

  • Add support for importing directly from Mermaid format to create new diagram.

Hi @kurtastbury!

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to share your thoughts; this is exactly the type of feedback I’m looking for!

I'd love to dig into this with you more if you're open to it. Feel free to email me at egrundvig@lucidchart.com and we'll find a quick time to chat. Either way, thank you again for the thoughtful response!

🧜‍♂️ Where is the initial mermaid code coming from?

I’m using Claude Code or Codex to create the initial mermaid diagram as it will get me 80% of the way to the full diagram much faster than creating it by hand. Claude Code / Codex has context on what I’m trying to do, so I prefer to start there instead of the Lucid AI.

🧜‍♂️ Once the mermaid is imported into Lucidchart, what types of things do you hope to be able to do with it?

I’d like to further modify the diagram by moving shapes around, color-coding, and organizing the diagram.

🧜‍♂️ Once the diagram looks the way you want it to in Lucid, what do you want to be able to do with it?

I’d want to link the diagram in a doc or PRD or similar for stakeholders to review and comment on.

🧜‍♂️ Which types of mermaid diagrams would you like to be able to use?

Flowchart would be most common

🧜‍♂️ What is the lifespan of the mermaid diagram? How is it being used again after the initial creation and collaboration?

For me, it would live in a PRD, so it would get referred to again through the development process.

Hi @hunter.dong,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share detailed feedback! Understanding your use case helps inform the features we bring to diagram-as-code in Lucidchart; we’re actively working on building out better support for similar use cases.
