I use lucidchart for modelling a lot at work and find it really great for creating and managing lots of models.

However my work has a requirement to use code based tools - i.e. diagramming tools that enable us to use the code in markdown files like plantuml or mermaid.

It would be great if Lucid Chart supported exporting to an industry or defacto standard like mermaid.

Hey Garfield

Thank you for posting in the Lucid Community and thank you for letting us hear how Lucid could better serve you! We have seen this request to integrate with Mermaid in the past so I want to assure you it's on our radar. I will be sure to reach back out with an update once those details are made available from our end.

Thanks again for your trust in Lucid--firm handshakes 🤝

Hi @Garfield M!  I am on the product team here at Lucid and am actively investigating some features that may help your use case. I’d love to learn from you! Let me know if you’re up for it and we can send more info to the email associated with your account. Thanks!

Hi. I see code to diagram. Now I need diagram to code, as requested above. I’d like to see my Lucidchart diagrams not locked-in please, then I can continue to use Lucidchart as my diagramming center and still create the Markdown documents that are required by many modern projects using exported mermaid from those diagrams. Please let us know when this feature is ready.

This is probably only the beginning though. I think that Markdown will become a/the reporting format of choice, so, in addition to generating slide sets/reports in ppt, it would be great to be able to export whole Lucidchart documents or reports as a single Markdown file with the diagrams formulated in mermaid….

Hi @Hub, thanks for contributing to this idea! Thank you for sharing your insights and what you’d like to see in this experience.

Hi,

We also want to start using the Lucid chart for ER diagrams and we want bi-directional feature as described by the HUB where our mermaid code should be able to generate the diagram but the diagram should be editable and it should generate the mermaid code so that we can use in other tools.

Hi @sagar raythatha, welcome to the Lucid Community! Thank you for contributing to this thread and for sharing what you would like to see in this experience. If you haven’t already, I would encourage you to upvote this post. It’s valuable to our product development team to understand how many people have the same feedback. The more the merrier!

This would be a great feature to have.🙂

My specific use case requires mermaid.js support. 🧜‍♀️
For example:

  1. I would create my diagram with Lucidchart.
  2. Then I would export it to mermaid code.
  3. I would then put this mermaid code in the relevant markdown file.
  4. Publish to our wiki (which supports mermaid blocks in markdown files).

Hi @Dylan, thank you for providing your feedback and providing details of what you’d like to see!

I’m also looking for a way to convert Lucidchart diagrams to mermaid syntax. It would be super helpful and a huge promo feature for Lucidchart. I need to help my team determine which tool to use (for a larger org in the company). Is there a way to be updated about the progress for this feature?

Hi @Jorena Collins, thank you for adding to this thread. I can certainly understand how this might be important to your work. Unfortunately, I do not have a timeline to share at this moment.

I can certainly say, however, that our product team is actively reviewing feedback in this space as they consider improvements and further developments to our products. Any updates regarding this feature request will be shared within this thread.

I encourage anyone else who is interested in this to upvote this post and share any additional details about your use case.

Mermaid export serves two key purposes:

  1. Enable diagram inclusion in markdown documentation (README files)
  2. Most importantly, facilitate diagram integration with Large Language Models (LLMs)

The ability to export to Mermaid would transform Lucidchart from a one-off executive slide diagraming tool into an integral part of the LLM-assisted design process. While I maintain a Lucidchart subscription, I currently have to use alternative tools that provide Mermaid export to effectively collaborate with LLMs.This brings into question the use of dollars for a LucidChart subscription as I don’t make many executive slides at the moment and mermaid is more critical.

Mermaid is being used like an LLM language to communicate process and build contexts.

Hi @Lord QuayQuay, thank you for adding your feedback to this thread and showing support for this feature. I can see how this feature would be beneficial and hope it is implemented. The product development team will continually review feedback within this space, so thank you for leaving your thoughts here.

This would be a huge feature for every one of the users within my company to use. It would be great to leverage created diagrams to export to Mermaid and then use AI based tools to create test cases off of that export.

Hi @Chance K, thank you so much for leaving your feedback here and showing your support for this feature!

I am interested in this functionality, as well. For the same reason as @Dylan mentioned above.

Thank you @cvonredapt for adding your comment to this thread! If you haven’t already, I also recommend upvoting this post to show your support for this idea. This helps our product team accurately gauge the popularity of this request.

Upvoted on the other mermaid-specific, but I’d even happily take an export to code that is my existing doc and could be imported by someone else. I have to transition docs between businesses/teams that don’t share lucid accounts quite often.

There’s ability to transfer entirely, but lots of times it involves creating a duplicate + cutting it down to then share. If there was a way to generate it for a selected list of objects / specific sheet and just get it as SCM friendly code, that’d be wicked awesome.

Thanks so much @dwelch2344 for upvoting and adding your comment with feedback here too! This sort of feedback is incredibly helpful to our product teams as they continue to research product enhancements and new features.

Waiting for this

I would appreciate a feature in Lucid that allows exporting diagrams as code, such as in the Mermaid format.

HI @sebastian.rojas and @vjrs, Thanks for the adding your support to this idea. Make sure to upvote and check out this post for more information on how feedback is collected in the community:

Hi Lucid team! I’m a staff engineer for a publicly traded AI banking company. We use Lucidchart and Lucidspark extensively across our product development & engineering department, but since our overall documentation strategy has shifted to AI-assisted, not being able to export our diagrams into a language that is easy to include direct in code to provide context LLMs has been diminishing our adoption. Having this capability would be a huge help for us to do all our diagramming directly in Lucid and then have that ability to feed the results to AI. Thanks for your consideration!

Thanks for your insights @danmusiccode !
