Double-click and triple-click in text

In most text applications, double-click selects a word, and triple-click selects a paragraph. But Lucidchart seems to deviate from this industry standard. Even when working with small amounts of text in an object, this can be a real inhibitor. And when working fast, as I tend to when working among different applications, my tendency to double-click to edit a single word in Lucid suddenly causes me to accidentally delete all the text in an object or a table cell.  ;-(

I realize I’m probably expressing this idea “to a vacuum”, but I just wanted to express how frustrating this phenomena is. And it seems to be a recent change; up until a few weeks ago, double-click did seem to work as expected in text containers of most kinds. I wonder if a remedy can be created to align to the generally established practice.

I’d like to withdraw the prior post. I have found a “partial workaround” using  Select Navigation Mode (in zooming). This allows for a Trackpad setting, even if using an ordinary mouse, and this setting allows for ordinary double click in some situations. Odd, but useful for most text, although it doesn’t seem to work in tables.

Hi @Rafael Olivas,

Thank you for sharing this! You are definitely not speaking into a vacuum. We understand how any deviation from expected text behavior can disrupt your workflow and cause frustration!

It’s very insightful that you found a partial workaround via Select navigation mode, but I wanted to share a few tips for selecting and managing text that might help streamline things:

  • Click once on a text box or shape to select the object itself. Double-click the object to select all of the text within it and enter text editing mode. To then focus on a specific area without everything highlighted, click once more within the text to deselect the block while remaining in editing mode.
  • If double-clicking feels inconsistent, you can also add text to a shape by selecting it and simply starting to type, or use Shift or Command/Ctrl + Enter to add a break between lines of text within a shape.
  • If you notice the text isn't appearing or behaving as expected, it can sometimes be related to how the canvas is rendering. You can try toggling WebGL by going to the More menu > View > Rendering and unchecking "Use WebGL" to see if that improves the click responsiveness.
