The old Lucidchart Canvas integration is sunsetting to make way for the new and improved Lucid experience in Canvas. In this article we will cover how to transition away from the old Canvas integration.
How to get free access to Lucid through Canvas
All instructors and students get a free unlimited account to Lucid when you sign in or register for Lucid through Canvas. The easiest method for creating your Lucid account in Canvas is using the Lucid (Whiteboard) shortcut in the Canvas course navigation panel. Learn more here.
- If your courses don’t have a Lucid (Whiteboard) button in the Course navigation panel go to settings for your course and drag Lucid (Whiteboard) into your selected navigation options.
- If you don’t see Lucid (whiteboard) as an option in your Canvas course navigation settings, contact the Canvas administrator for your institution and request for it to be added. (while you wait for your institution to get Lucid (Whiteboard) added to the course navigation for your institution you can register in the RCE by click on the black “L”
If you were using the old integration you won’t be automatically upgraded to the full enterprise experience through Canvas automatically. Because your account is tied to a centralized paid account. The OLD Canvas integration required all users to be on a centralized paid Lucid account with their institution. The new integration places each user on an individual account.
If you are an Instructor or Student with an active, paid Individual or Team plan with Lucid and would like to claim the free access provided through Canvas, follow these steps to cancel your subscription before upgrading your Lucid account in Canvas.
If you are still having trouble upgrading your Lucid account through Canvas, email support@lucid.co.
Some institutions have decided to continue to have a centralized paid account in order to include their non-instructional staff and access additional administrative controls. Your institution should work with your Customer Success Manager to make sure that logging in through Canvas is enabled for your account.
How is the old integration different from the new experience
In the past you may have added Lucid activities to your Canvas assignments using the Lucidchart icon from Canvas apps under the plug in the rich content editor.
Accessing Lucid is much easier than before. First off you will find it in a couple new places.
- Lucid (Whiteboard) shortcut in the Canvas course navigation panel. This is a shortcut to access your Lucid dashboard where all of your documents are stored.
- To send a Lucid template to each of your students as an assignment. You now select Lucid as a submission type in a Canvas assignment. Learn more here.
- You can now embed collaborative activities directly onto the Canvas page using the black L from the rich content editor. Learn more here.
Now that Lucid has partnered up with Canvas, there are many more exciting ways to use Lucid to enhance instruction and student learning. There are a ton of additional resources that you can use to get started with the new Lucid experience in Canvas. Check them out here.
Recreating a similar experience to the OLD integration
If you would like to share Lucid activities in Canvas without using the new embedded experience, you can still activate your free access through Canvas and then use Lucid outside of Canvas and continue to use Lucid in a similar way to the old integration. Follow the instructions below.
1. Create a force-copy link for the Lucid template/s you would like the students to use for the group assignment
2. Create an assignment in Canvas
3. Add the instructions for the group assignment in the Canvas Rich Content Editor and insert the force copy link to the template
4. Set the Submission Type to Online: File Upload and/or Website URL
5. Save and publish the assignment
How students access and submit the assignment
1. Each student clicks on the template linked by the instructor in the instructions of the assignment and gets their own copy to work with.
2. When the students are done, they submit their assignment using a PDF or URL.
PDF Submission: students generate and submit a PDF by clicking “File → export as a PDF” and then submit using the file upload option in Canvas
URL Submission: students copy and paste the Lucid share-link into the Canvas URL submission. (if students submit using a link, from Speed Grader you will need to click on “view in a new tab” in order to view it)
