Video: How I lay out the complex process of Medication Reconciliation with a flowchart

Detailed Walkthrough

There are so many steps involved in the medication reconciliation process, so Perla uses Lucidchart to help students create a visual aid to help them work through the process.

Perla starts the lesson by asking students “What is the first part of the reconciliation process?  What comes before we even start getting out the medications?”  Then, Perla and the students discuss the preparation process and everyone starts to build their process map on their own devices with Perla screen sharing the process map she is building for the class to reference as they build their own.  Once they have built the initial part of the process, they move on to discuss and build the next part of the process map and they continue these steps until the entire process map is complete.

This type of active learning activity is so impactful for students because the students are involved in both discussing and building the process which improves their knowledge retention, enhances their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and gives students a deeper understanding of the material leading to better overall academic and on-the-job performance.
