The old Lucidchart integration in Canvas is being phased out to make way for the new and improved Lucid experience. This guide will walk you through the transition process.
Retiring the Old Lucidchart Experience: What to Know
In July 2025, the old Lucidchart integration in Canvas will be removed.
Prior to July, we recommend…
- Connecting to the new, free Lucid experience in Canvas
- Replacing any Lucid documents/linked embedded into courses via the old integration with new links, if you’d like to continue to use them in your Canvas courses.
Transition Step 1: Getting Free Access to Lucid through Canvas
All Canvas instructors and students now receive a free, unlimited Lucid account when they sign in or register through Canvas.
Note: if you have been using the old Lucidchart integration in Canvas, you will not be automatically upgraded to the new Canvas experience. You must follow the steps below to activate your upgrade.
The easiest method is using the Lucid (Whiteboard) shortcut in the Canvas course navigation panel. Learn more here.
- What to Do If you Don’t see the “Lucid (Whiteboard) Button:
- Go to your course “Settings” drag Lucid (Whiteboard) into your selected navigation options.
- If you don’t see “Lucid (Whiteboard)” as an option, contact the Canvas administrator for your institution and request for it to be added.
- While waiting for the course navigation access point, n, you can register within the Rich Content Editor (RCE)by clicking on the black “L”.
What to Do If You Have an Active, Paid Lucid Plan
If you have an Individual or Team plan with Lucid but are an instructor or student and want to claim the free access through Canvas, follow these steps to cancel your subscription before upgrading your Lucid account in Canvas. If you encounter any issues, , email support@lucid.co.
Centralized, Paid Accounts
Some institutions may opt to maintain a centralized paid account to include non-instructional staff and access additional administrative controls. If your institution chose this route, work with your Customer Success Manager to ensure Canvas login is enabled for your account.
Transition Step 2: Replacing Lucid Documents/Links in the Old Integration
- Embed documents into Canvas pages, discussions
- Assign documents through Canvas Assignments
-
Manually recreate the old integration’s assignment experience:
Steps for Instructors:
-
Create a force-copy link for the Lucid template/s you want students to
-
Create an assignment in Canvas and add the assignment instructions in the Rich Content Editor
-
Insert the “force copy” link into the instructions
-
Set the submission type to “Online: File Upload and/or Website URL”
-
Save and publish the assignment
How Students Access and Submit the Assignment:
-
Students click on the template link provided in the assignment instructions to generate their own copy.
-
Upon completion, students submit their work using either:
-
PDF Submission - Export as PDF (File → Export as PDF) and upload it to Canvas.
-
URL Submission - Copy and paste the Lucid share link into Canvas.
-
Note: if students submit using a URL link, instructors will need to click “View in a new tab” in SpeedGrader to view submissions.
