In Higher Education, we don't talk about formative assessment as often as our K-12 colleagues, but it is just as universal. It’s the difference between landing the plane in the wrong city and course-correcting while you’re still in the air.

In my Intro to EdTech courses, I use Lucid to move formative assessment away from being checked and toward taking action. It’s about helping learners identify where they are and where they need to go next.

Here is how I leverage Lucid for sophisticated formative feedback:

  • Mapping Social Capital: I have my pre-service teachers map out their own networks and strengths. It forces a level of metacognition that a standard reflection paper rarely captures.
  • Collaborative Peer Support: The real magic happens when students connect their maps. If one student is struggling with a concept that another has mastered, they use arrows to link up and support one another.
  • Real-Time Insight: I don't have to wait for a mid-term to see where the gaps are. I can see the web of connections in real-time and adjust my next lecture accordingly.

Formative assessment shouldn't just be for the instructor- it should empower the student to take their own next steps.

How do you use visual tools to gauge student understanding in your seminars?

You are so right, self reflection and peer support is such an important part of the learning process.  I haven’t used a mind map like this before.  Thanks for the new idea Shira, I love it! 😻
