It seems that when I write the 
symbol I get PNG image of the symbol instead of the special character. Does someone happen to know if there is a way to use the special character instead of the big symbol? I can't find anything from the text settings and uploading a custom font did not seem to work.

You can insert special symbols like the registered trademark symbol by copying and pasting them from another text editor or using keyboard shortcuts to insert them. You can change the size and position of them using the standard text editor menu in Lucid.
However it isn't possible to change the font of these symbols in Lucidchart. If you'd like to promote enhancements to this to our product development team please add the idea to our product feedback section.
Hello I am having a similar issue. I have copied and pasted a registered trademark symbol from another text box in Lucidchart and also from a word doc and it pastes as a large black
. I am unable to edit the size color or placement of the symbol in Lucidchart. When copying a white superscript 
it pastes a large black one. The text editor does not change the symbol. Please advise.

I am unable to change the size and position (or color) of the symbol. Is that not possible? Additionally I am attempting to copy and paste an already formatted version of the symbol and the formatting is changing. Why is that occurring?
I am having the same issue - copied and pasted from a Word doc but unable to change the size font or position in the text editor. Just a giant cartoonish trademark symbol that looks unprofessional. I can put in a feature request but given the instructions above sounds more like a bug.
Hi @sarah r101 thank you for continuing this thread and I'm sorry for the trouble you are experiencing with the trademark symbol. I have gone ahead and logged your feedback with our development team.
As a workaround it looks like the icon with Unicode U+24C7 Ⓡ it will not be registered as an emoji/icon and you will be able to format it as expected. I have attached a screenshot demonstrating the difference:
You should be able to copy the icon from my comment and paste it into your document.
