As a LucidChart user, I need to be able to turn off the “auto-arrange” functionality when linking shapes together, because there are times when that’s not what I need.

Let’s say you’re building an org chart. You have shapes for everyone and you link them all together using the lines you can drag from the purple dots. You then arrange all of the shapes into a larger shape that reflects your teams and whatever else. Then you add someone on top.

Expected Result:
A line is drawn linking the new top shape and the rest of the tree.

Actual Result:
The entire tree is reorganized.

Now there are definitely times when I like this auto-arrange feature. There are others, such as the example above, then this is not appropriate. There is currently no way to manage this except either don’t link your shapes or re-arrange the entire thing.

Hi @hfisher, a clarifying question: would you be willing to share a before-and-after screenshot of what you’re seeing with the undesired auto-arrangement?

Sure! This is the image as I need it:

If you delete the line between the “Program” and “Initiative” objects and re-draw it directly between the shapes, you end up with this:

I did find a workaround that if you draw a line from a shape to the canvas first THEN pick up the canvas end and drop it on a shape, it doesn’t re-order. The ask is to have an option to get that result but not need the two-step.

Hi @hfisher, thanks for this great example - I see what you mean and appreciate you taking the time to share what would be helpful to you. This will be helpful to our development team.

I do also want to mention that it appears you’re using the “site map” shape library - due to the rigid logic associated with these, the auto-arrangement feature is built into them. However, I believe you can achieve a very similar look using the rectangles and other shapes from the “Standard” shapes library, which move freely. I hope this is a helpful alternative!

Oh good to know - I will try that next time! Thanks Micah!
