I frequently position Text near Shapes. I usually employ a 1/4” grid and enable Snap to Grid and Snap to Objects. With snapping enabled, it’s often difficult to position the text close to shapes. The text is either too far away or it overlaps the shape. I’m sure there are many other instances where quickly defeating snapping would be useful.

It would be great to have a key that, while pressed, disables all (or at least grid) snapping. To fine-tune the position of an object, press the key, move the object to the desired position, and release the key. While the key is pressed, motion is smooth without snapping at grid lines, guidelines, etc. (For those who play FPS games, it’s kind of like sniper mode.)

Currently, I have to let go of the text object, make 3 clicks (View>Grid>unSnapToGrid) for fine-tuning, go back and move the text, then 3 more clicks to get back to normal.

Hi Paul! If you hold CTRL while positioning an object, you should get the fine-positioning that you describe.

Hey OP,
I’ve found that holding Shift while pressing an arrow key nudges a selected object in that arrow’s direction. In my case, I’m using 0.125” grid, and it takes 10 nudges to move that distance.
