If I create a chart and I want to add a watermark on it like we can do in Word or Powerpoint, is that possible to do it? e.g. I would like to add “Confidential” as a watermark on a diagram I created.

I found a workaround myself. Just use text box, color in gray and make it at 45 degree angle and “send to back” to look like a watermark. However, it will be nice if there is a menu item to add a watermark. Just suggesting a feature for one of the next releases.

Hi @VSAT, that’s a great workaround! Unfortunately, there is currently no true watermark feature available in Lucid, but we’re very interested in your feedback and committed to continually improving our products.

Another user actually submitted this as a feature request! If you’re willing to, we’d love to hear about what you’d like to see in the thread linked below. Upvoting the post below and adding your comment in there is the best method for showing your support for this to be implemented.

One other suggestion that might help with the workaround - you can lock the text box that you’ve created using the instructions here. This may help so ensure that the makeshift watermark remains in the same spot on your document and isn’t accidentally deleted.

Thanks for considering watermark as a feature! Looking forward to see it in production asap.

You can also put the watermark into it’s own layer so that you can turn it on and off at will. Out of the way while working. Visible while taking screenshots.

What functions would you want in the feature? (besides what you did in your workaround)

There may be other workarounds possible for those too.

I would like to have following features:

  1. A watermark in the background such as “Confidential” that can be gray but visible if one wants to share documents.
  2. If I export the document to PDF or send to others, the watermark should remain there
  3. I should have option to make watermark coming on the front and change colors as needed. e.g. I should be able to put a watermark in Red saying “Obsolete” and that can be on the top instead of at the back. I may want to keep an old but obsolete design as a reference, but if I share the chart with others, they should not confuse and clearly should be able to differentiate between obsolete and current design.

  1. It feels like you got this working already. What’s missing from your workaround?
  2. With your method, this should work fine. The bottom layer shape should export with the rest of the drawing. There’s some other hacks for PDFs if you are interested in ‘write-protecting’ the document since PDFs can just be an image. So a screencapture might do what you need.. Just more than 1 step so not perfect, i know.
    1. Another hack/exploit, if you export to visio (a lot of people have the free visio viewer), any set of shapes that are grouped, become a single unalterable image shape. ctrl-A group then export and you’ve got an archive document that is not fun to try and edit. Personally, i have hotkeys setup to do quick screen captures and this is my go to for view/export. YMMV
  3. You can create the watermark(s) that you want and save them a custom shapes to reuse them whenever you want. Just Arrange|Send to back and resize to fit the size of the chart. When you want a chart to be clearly marked. Ctrl-A all the shapes and group them and or lock them. This will set up a few challenges for anyone trying to work with it like normal. There’s also a sharing level that will let people read and not edit.. Part of your process could be to change the sharing rules when something is only a reference document.

FYI, the feature request link is a good place to fill this out. I’m just another Lucid user (not employee) that likes stretching the tool to do stuff like this. I’m wearing my “I void warranties” t-shirt right now. HTH
