Lucid is committed to creating products that are accessible and user-friendly for everyone. We are constantly working to improve the accessibility of our products and welcome feedback and suggestions from our users! We believe that by listening to our users' ideas and experiences we can continue to improve the accessibility and user-friendliness of our products.

If you have any suggestions or feedback on how we can improve the accessibility of our products we would love to hear from you. Have feature ideas for making Lucid easier to use with a physical or cognitive disability? Please comment in this thread to share your experiences ideas and suggestions.

January 27, 2025

Hi all! I’m Micah, Lucid’s community manager, and I’m excited to share several updates relating to accessibility in our products.

First, I’d like to share a heartfelt thank you for your engagement and insights you’ve shared in this conversation. Your time and thoughtfulness have done a lot to help us understand what you’d like to see when working in Lucid. We couldn’t, and wouldn’t want to, do it without you!

New accessibility hub and Lucidspark Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT)

Now, you can find all information and resources on accessibility, including Lucid’s official accessibility statement and compliance information, at lucid.co/accessibility. Additionally, you can follow the instructions on this page to access the Lucidchart and new Lucidspark VPAT.

Take a look at this post to learn more about these updates:

Thank you for your feedback here, @Ria S, @amcallisterocad , @ruviwije  , @Pamela J , @gcander , @David , @JoshMCCKC  , and @Debbie Ginsburg !

Status update on other accessibility-related requests

In addition to the VPAT, this thread contains other feedback and feature requests for accessibility features. This is tremendously important to us! We're happy about the progress we're making with accessibility, and while we've not built all of these features, our product team will incorporate these insights as we move forward. We’d like to provide the following status updates:

  • Screen reader support (requested by @Ria S  , @KCatterall  ): We’re thrilled to support this! Find comprehensive information about this in our Use a screen reader in Lucid article from our Help Center.

  • Dark mode/high-contrast mode/colorblind-friendly mode (requested by @k.kompaniets, @Aileen C  , @Rob F , @Tomo  , @mduran  , @chaocipher ): these modes are currently not on our roadmap. Workarounds and further context are available within this thread:

However, our product team is exploring a solution of using patterns as color fill for shapes, which may help with these use cases. When we’re able, we’ll provide an update in this thread:

Finally, you may also find it helpful to utilize accessibility best practices in this Make Lucid documents more accessible article from our Help Center. In particular, Themes allow you to style your document with darker or higher contrast visuals. For more information on how to use this tool, please refer to this Apply preset themes to style shapes in Lucidchart article.

  • Voice command integration (requested by @Ria S): While Lucid doesn’t officially support specific voice command software, we do follow accessibility standards that enable a better experience for voice command (Semantic HTML elements, descriptive labels, and ARIA when necessary.) Additionally, we recently added a user setting to disable single character hotkeys so that speech input users can say single characters without accidentally triggering hotkeys.

  • “Simple” UI (requested by @rafaalb07  ): We’d love to hear more about this! While we don’t have immediate developments here to share, we’re eager to learn more about what specific elements you’d like to see in this experience via this community’s Product Feedback space

In order to provide clarity on your feature requests and feedback moving forward, we plan to close this larger thread and manage requests about accessibility improvements individually. This will allow us to better provide status updates as we continue to make progress. We’re happy to close this latest round of development with VPAT and screen reader support, and for all other outstanding requests described above, we’ll continue to manage them separately in this community’s Product Feedback space.

Note: If you are a user on a FedRAMP account, please use this form to share any feedback or feature requests.

Hello!
Please add Сolorblind Friendly Mode for sticky notes in da Lucidspark?
Like Trello’s texture overlay on colors: https://wearecolorblind.com/examples/trello-colorblind-friendly-mode/

This would help the entire diverse team understand the status of stickers/ideas/tasks. Thx!

Hi @k.kompaniets

Thank you for your suggestion! We are currently considering some concepts to make our products more colorblind friendly. Would you be willing to meet with our team via Zoom for 30 minutes to provide your feedback?

When it comes to accessibility I know there's a lot to think about but for Lucidspark phase 1: Dark Theme I'd appreciate just a light text on a dark background model.

Could be as simple as only allowing for white on black for sticky notes etc... or having a Dark Theme template that users can select...

- I'd also like to vote for adopting the "set as default" standard that exists in Lucidchart shapes (but maybe for Sticky Notes in Lucidspark)  :)

Hi @aileen c!
We are definitely thinking about our use of color and how we can create more accessible experiences. We would love to talk with you over a call sometime about your ideas and to get your feedback on some features we’re considering. Would you be open to that?
If you're interested please let us know and we'll have a member of our team send more information to the email associated with your account.

Hi @rob f

We have a few existing features in Lucidchart and Lucidspark that enable you to select a darker color theme for your documents.

  • In Lucidchart you can go to "Styles" in the formatting options in the header and select a dark theme for your document.
  • In Lucidspark you can go to "Board Settings" and "Open Board Settings." There you can select a custom background color. Here's documentation on how to do so.
  • We have also recently enabled dynamic text color changing that responds conditionally to the sticky note color you have selected to maintain adequate color contrast ratios.

We are working on some upcoming features and polish to deepen support for theme preferences. We'd love to get your feedback over a call if you're interested!

As I have made the point in the previous thread whilst you do have some dark styles that depends on the author of the document realising the need to do that before they start. I strongly suggest for accessibility you need to be working on a solution whereby if someone has started to create a document or there is an existing document with one of your usual white backgrounds and another person needs to consume that document in dark mode without reauthoring it changing styles or any other edits but just for THEM and THEIR needs is able to flip it into dark mode is an essential outcome. Just as is possible for most office documents common productivity apps and most web pages by having my Windows OS set to high contrast mode.

Desireable outcome: change a Windows OS device into high contrast mode (Left-Shift + Alt + PrintScreen) can a usually white background lucid document rerender into a dark mode without items becoming invisible and without impacting anyone elses view of the document?

I’m happy to see that Lucid is ensuring that its products are inclusive and useable for Users with a physical or cognitive disability.

Voice command integration (e.g. VoiceOver, JAWS, NVDA) to allow users with physical disabilities to control various Lucid products can be something you can consider exploring.

Based on my interaction with LucidChart, I think that it is well aligned with the Web Content Accessibility Guideline (WCAG).

@Addie Maybe an Idea would be to have “Simple HTML” logic.

I don't know if this is even possible or if relates to accessibility but a feature of  “Simple UI” could be interesting.

It is common to face problems to upload heavy boards when you are using an old PC and/or a slow connection.

PS: Gmail had something like this in the past (called Simple HTML for Slow Connections - example below)

this is great, but I want the whole page to be in Dark mode. I work long days and hours in front of a computer. Dark mode helps my eyes. is there a way to do that?

Hi @mduran, at the moment, a dark mode setting that applies to the whole editor UI isn’t currently supported. However, we recognize that this would be highly impactful for the reasons you described. In addition to this accessibility-based thread, I’d also recommend taking a look at/upvoting this idea specifically for dark mode:

We appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback and insight with us!

It would be good to include Mac’s built in Voice command as well, as this is rapidly becoming more used than JAWS and NVDA by mac users.
