I created a Lucidspark Matrix Activity for my students to move Climate claims into 4 categories:

I created an assignment in Canvas and used the Lucid tool in submission type:

I watched students make changes on their versions of the activity and click on Submit in Lucid to turn in the assignment, but when I go to Speedgrader in Canvas the submission doesn’t have any of the changes the student made - it’s just the original assignment.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi @Shawn Moore

It sounds like the issue could be related to how the Lucid tool is integrated with Canvas for assignment submissions. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

1. Ensure Proper Submission Workflow

  • Double-check that students are following the correct steps when submitting their assignment in Lucid. They should make changes, save their work, and then explicitly use the Submit button within Lucid for the changes to be captured in Canvas.

2. Verify Assignment Setup in Canvas

  • Go to the assignment settings in Canvas and ensure that the Submission Type is properly configured for the Lucid integration. If the assignment is set up for Online Submission, make sure File Uploads or External Tool is selected based on how Lucid is integrated.

3. Check Versioning in Lucid

  • Sometimes, students might be working on different versions of the document. Ensure they are editing the live version that is linked to the assignment and that they aren't inadvertently creating a new copy of the document.

4. Review Lucid Permissions in Canvas

  • Ensure that students have proper permissions to make edits and submit their work within the Lucid document linked to Canvas. You might want to test submitting an assignment yourself as a student to see if the issue persists.

5. Contact Lucid Support

  • If the issue persists, consider reaching out to Lucid’s support team or the Canvas admin at your institution. It might be an integration issue that needs further assistance.

Hope this helps

Hey @Shawn Moore - looking at your assignment, I think you selected a visual activity for this assignment.  This will not work properly with the Lucid submission type assignment functionality in Canvas because visual activities actually collect the data for you.  There are a couple things you can try instead.

  1. If you want to use speed grader- You can copy and paste the content for the activity outside of the visual activity and directly onto the Lucidspark board.  This would allow your students to complete the same activity and be able to use Lucid as the submission type so you can access student work through Canvas’ Speed Grader. (video)
  2. If you want to view the data through Lucid, you can post the visual activity using the collaborative Canvas option (Black L in the RCE) and use “no submission” instead of using “Lucid” as the submission type.  This way students will complete the activity and the data will be collected by Lucid and you would click on “view results” from the Lucid activity to see what the students did. I would be happy to explain this in more detail if you would like.  Feel free to private message me and we can get a meeting on the calendar.

@Vanessa C101 This makes perfect sense! Thank you. I did this in a similar way with students but sent them directly to the Lucid document instead of assigning as a Canvas assignment and it worked perfectly. Thanks for helping me understand what was going on.
