I wanted to share an activity I created for my students in Lucidspark that incorporates reading, annotation, and discussion using a Jigsaw style format using Breakout Boards.

First I created a table in the main board where students fill out information about Utah’s three geographical regions. Then for each region, I built a Breakout Board that included the necessary information for each region.

Students were each assigned one region of Utah to read about, then highlight/annotate the parts of the table they needed to fill in. The image below shows a completed annotation.

After reading and annotating, students were placed into groups of three with each student having been assigned a different region to read about. They then discussed the regions with each other, helping the other members of their group fill out the table on the main board.

I also use Lucidspark for digital notebooks, and after filling out the entire table, students could easily copy it, and paste it into their notebook for future reference.

Thanks for sharing!  I love the idea of breaking up research into a jigsaw using the breakout boards!

Breakout boards!?  I didn’t know about these!  I’m going to see how to make something like this work with my kids :)  Thanks for bringing it up!

Wow, what a great example! Thank you for sharing a completed annotation, too. Very cool to see how students are using the draw tools for annotations and then working together collaboratively to share what they’ve learned with others in their small groups.

This is a clever idea. I’ll definitively try this with my groups.
