Lucid’s integration with Canvas offers a wide variety of ways to enhance student learning whether your class is in-person, hybrid, or virtual.

Embed a Lucid document

Let’s start with the option to embed Lucid documents in Canvas using the Rich Content Editor (RCE). Embedding a Lucid document through the RCE allows students to view or edit the same document—any edits made by a student or the teacher are visible to everyone, making this option great for classroom discussions, brainstorming sessions, icebreakers, etc.

You can embed Lucid documents anywhere in Canvas that uses the RCE, including the Course Syllabus, Assignments, Quizzes, Announcements, Pages, and Discussions. Here are some ways you can use Lucid for each of these options:

  • Create a view-only interactive calendar to embed at the top of the syllabus.
  • Have students collaborate to add sticky notes or mind map nodes during a brainstorming assignment or discussion.
  • Build a flowchart for students to reference during a quiz.
  • Add a Visual Activity as an icebreaker students can respond to in an announcement.AD_4nXczt7JUguGHL4A-Dqp0w5TOe8JUEPwzd8l_KB4QOdzfwc2opRh4MZenkt43Xe7uTqzm7auerT0QvIKcPdq25_3TrIbF--KewOBRjGFutlExT1p9VJelRIWl38__Cs8tk9PL0TFQUagu9XjMIijxu2evurM?key=ze0jyPPRWYB1HIL_cSECbA
  • Create a home page for your Canvas course (pro tip: use the hotspot shape in Lucidchart to make it interactive).AD_4nXc_ArDJdAC3ppmwh_I8Pu-XT1fnH2TAFulFIhqUcru-8TIfZIXY23p8HQsnd7XIS-giaO_76dSxSHuyRqKH8KVa8YVmWYqUGQEMHJ9dr7Xfpngw4cFxj5W8q8TBqjcHxV-y1w7qZfUINNg8wvVErgPkipo?key=ze0jyPPRWYB1HIL_cSECbA

Create an assignment

In addition to embedding Lucid documents in Canvas, you can create Assignments using Lucid as an External Tool. Using this method creates a unique copy of the Lucid document for students to work on. Any edits a student makes are visible only to them, making this option great for individual assignments, worksheets, projects, etc.

One of my favorite ways to use this tool is for digital notebooks. Using Lucidspark, I have created a digital notebook for each unit of my class (read more about digital notebooks in this community post). With this integration, I can create an assignment using Lucid as an External Tool, which provides each student with their own copy of the digital notebook.

Let us know in the comments how you plan to use the Canvas/Lucid integration this coming school year! We’d love to hear and share your examples!

love the table of contents as part of the notebook - SO useful for keeping things organized.

Hi, @Morgan T

I’m a Lucidchart  pro but new to Canvas.  You wrote, “Build a flowchart for students to reference during a quiz.”  Can you show me how Canvas does something more for me than just displaying LucidChart for this purpose?  I am not hitting any “I wish I could do this” issues with my current strategy.

A link to a demo of the relevant Canvas feature would be enough - I don’t need you to make anything for me specific to flowcharting.

Thanks!

-Bram

Hi @bram.moreinis! You can check out our Integrate Lucid with Canvas article for specifics on how to access the integration. Being able to embed a Lucidchart document directly into a quiz description or question makes it so students are not having to switch back and forth between Canvas and Lucid, and can remain in Canvas the entire time. This is a bonus for me as it gets my students using Lucidchart faster since they typically already know how to use Canvas, and I don’t have to worry so much about how my students are getting Lucid accounts, getting them logged in, getting a document to them, etc.

Let me know if you have any other questions! I’d be happy to discuss some use cases for the many ways this integration can be used!

Thank you!   My coding students learn Lucid from their team accounts doing flowcharting at the start of class, so moving into Canvas would actually be an extra step for them in my case.

@bram.moreinis If you’d like to see an example of the integration, check out this video. But where you already use Lucidchart often in the classroom, it makes sense that this particular use case might not be for you!

I like the notebook option!  We’ll be on iPads this year, so my kids would be able to both draw easily and type.  I’m excited to try it out… after I get approval with COPPA and my kids.
